FAQ

Choosing

What height plinth do I need?

Plinth height plus half the object's height should land at about 1,370mm. In practice that means a 900mm plinth for most objects between 250 and 500mm tall. The reasoning, the exceptions and a full table are on Choosing a Plinth Height — it is the most useful page on this site.

How much clear top surface should I leave around the object?

100mm minimum on every side, 150–200mm if the object is tall relative to its base or visitors will lean in.

Glass or acrylic?

Low-iron glass for anything permanent, anything photographed, and anything where optical clarity matters — it does not green at the edges and it does not scratch in normal use. Acrylic where weight, safety or a travelling exhibition is the constraint: it is a fraction of the weight and it does not shatter, but it scratches, it attracts dust electrostatically, and the wrong cleaner destroys it.

Do I need a sealed conservation case?

Only if the object is sensitive to humidity swings, pollutants or light, and only if it is staying in the case for months rather than days. A sealed case is a significantly different product at a significantly different price. Specifying a Display Case explains how to tell.

What colour is your gallery white?

A warm off-white, deliberately. Brilliant white photographs blue and competes with the object. We will spray true white, or any RAL or NCS reference, on request.

Made to measure

Can you make it 40mm shorter?

Yes. Almost everything we make can be made to a dimension. Email support@homartuk.com — Made to Measure lists what to send.

How long does made-to-measure take?

3–4 weeks for a sprayed plinth, 5–7 for a case, 8–12 for a sealed conservation case. Full table on the Made to Measure page.

Can you match units we already own?

Often, yes, if you can send photographs, dimensions and ideally a colour reference. A sprayed sample before we commit to a batch is the honest way to do it.

Will eight plinths in a set actually match?

Yes — that is what a matched set means, and we hold ±1mm and sequence-match veneer across the set. Eight ordered separately over two years will not match, and we would not pretend otherwise.

Ordering and delivery

What does delivery cost?

£14.95 under £500, free at £500 and over. Large items — cases, full-height plinths, display walls, staging, packages — carry a £79 two-person charge, shown at checkout. Mainland UK only. See Delivery.

Will it fit through my door?

Measure the narrowest point of the route, not the doorway — it is usually a turn or a half-landing. Send us that dimension and we will tell you. This is the one question worth asking before you order rather than after.

Do you deliver outside the UK?

Not through the website. Email us before ordering and we will tell you honestly whether we can help.

Do you install?

For cases, wall systems and full-height units in England and Wales, yes — ask for a price with your quote. Standard deliveries are carried in, not installed.

Trade, museums and institutions

Do you offer trade accounts?

Yes, for galleries, museums, shopfitters, exhibition contractors and designers. Volume pricing, 30-day terms on approval, and call-off delivery against a single order. See Trade Accounts.

Can you quote against our drawings?

Yes. Send a PDF or DWG. Your drawings remain yours.

Can you supply material declarations for a conservation specification?

For sealed case builds, yes — tell us at enquiry stage so we specify to it from the start rather than retro-fitting a claim.

Are you VAT registered?

Prices shown are the prices you pay. If you need an invoice in a particular format for a purchase order, tell us and we will provide it.

Care

How do I clean acrylic?

Water and a clean microfibre cloth. Nothing else. Solvent, alcohol and ammonia-based cleaners — including most household glass sprays — craze acrylic permanently, and that is not a manufacturing fault.

How do I clean glass?

Spray the cloth, not the glass, so nothing runs into a silicone joint or a gasket. Avoid anything abrasive.

Can I touch up a sprayed plinth myself?

Yes — that is one of the reasons we spray MDF. Tell us the finish reference and we will confirm what to buy, or send a small quantity of the same batch.

My plinth rocks slightly.

Your floor is not level; almost none are. Every made-to-measure plinth over 600mm has adjustable feet. If yours does not, tell us and we will send a set.
