Roughly one order in five that comes through this shop starts as a question our catalogue can't answer. A plinth 40mm shorter because of a skirting board. A case sized to an object rather than to a standard sheet. A run of eight identical units that have to match each other more closely than they have to match anything we've made before.
We make those.
What we make to order
- Plinths in any height, footprint and finish, including tapered, plinth-and-cap, and units with a removable top for cable access.
- Display cases and vitrines — table-top, plinth-mounted, wall-mounted and full-height. Low-iron glass or acrylic, gasketted or silicone-jointed, with or without a sealed conservation specification.
- Wall systems and display walls, including slotted upright runs cut to a ceiling height and shadow-gap detailing.
- Mounts and risers — acrylic cradles, book wedges, coin trays, brass pin mounts, staging blocks.
- Matched sets, where the point is that eight units are indistinguishable from each other.
What we don't make: anything structural, anything that forms part of a building, and — honestly — one-off furniture that isn't a display piece. We'd rather send you to a cabinetmaker than do it badly.
Finishes
| Finish | Notes |
|---|---|
| Sprayed MDF, any RAL or NCS reference | The default for gallery work. Matt 5–10% sheen unless you specify otherwise. Repairable on site. |
| Gallery white | Our standard white is a warm off-white, not a brilliant white, because brilliant white photographs blue and fights the object. Say the word if you want true white. |
| Veneer — oak, ash, walnut, birch ply edge | Sequence-matched across a set. Lead time is longer. |
| Powder-coated steel or aluminium | For staging, uprights and anything that takes handling. |
| Laminate | Where the surface will be wiped daily — retail, education spaces, plant staging. |
For anything going inside a sealed case we will discuss materials with you rather than just take a colour reference, because the finish is part of the conservation specification. See Specifying a Display Case.
Tolerances
Worth stating plainly, because it is the thing that goes wrong:
- ±2mm on overall dimensions of a sprayed or laminated unit.
- ±1mm on glass and acrylic, and on anything within a matched set.
- Floors are not flat. We build square; your room probably isn't. Every made-to-measure plinth over 600mm tall gets adjustable feet as standard unless you tell us not to.
- Colour matched by eye, under your lighting, is not the same as colour matched to a code. If the match matters, ask for a sprayed sample before we make the batch. We'd rather send one.
How to get a quote
Email support@homartuk.com with as much of the following as you have. None of it is compulsory; all of it saves a round trip.
- Sizes — height, width, depth. Say which dimension matters most if something has to give.
- What's going on or in it — the object's size and weight, and whether it's handled.
- Quantity, and whether the units must match each other.
- Finish — a RAL or NCS reference, or a photograph of what it has to sit next to.
- Where it's going — floor, level, lift or stairs, door widths, and whether there's a loading bay.
- Your date. An install date is more useful to us than "as soon as possible".
- A sketch, however rough. A phone photo of a napkin has saved more projects than a CAD file.
We usually come back within two working days with a price, a lead time and any questions. Quotes are held for 30 days.
Lead times
| Item | Typical lead time |
|---|---|
| Sprayed plinth, single or small set | 3–4 weeks |
| Matched set of 6 or more | 4–6 weeks |
| Table-top or plinth-mounted case | 5–7 weeks |
| Sealed conservation case | 8–12 weeks |
| Wall system run | 4–5 weeks |
| Acrylic mounts and risers | 2–3 weeks |
These are honest averages, not promises we make before seeing a drawing. If your date is fixed, say so at the first email and we will tell you straight away whether it's possible.
Payment, changes and cancellation
- 50% on order, balance before despatch for made-to-measure work.
- Changes are free until we cut. We will tell you the date that happens.
- After that, made-to-measure items cannot be cancelled or returned unless they are faulty or not as specified. This is the standard exemption for goods made to a consumer's specification under the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013, and it does not affect your rights if something is wrong with what we send. Our returns page sets out the detail.
Installation
Most of what we make arrives assembled and needs nothing but two people and a clear route. Cases, wall systems and full-height units can be installed by us in England and Wales — ask for a price with the quote. We are not electricians; where a case or display needs a supply, that connection is for a qualified electrician on your side.
