Five Tier Plant Wall 1800mm Wide in Powder Coated Steel
Details
A plant display system for a full plant wall, five tiers, with lighting and drainage designed in rather than added afterwards. Rated for wet weight, drained properly and lit where it needs to be.
Plants are heavier than people expect and wetter than furniture likes. A 400mm pot of wet compost is about 25 kilograms, and a stand that is fine for a sculpture will eventually rack under it. Everything in this part of the range is rated wet rather than dry, and everything that a pot sits directly on is either sealed or supplied with a tray, because the commonest way to ruin a good stand is to water the plant on it.
Specification
- Dimensions: see the product name for the width, 400mm deep, 1800mm high
- Display surface: sealed decks with a 15mm lip and a drain point on every tier
- Construction: welded frame with removable decks, so a deck can be lifted out and washed
- Finish: 2mm folded steel, welded and ground before coating so no seam shows, in a fine texture powder coat
- Load rating: 40kg per tier wet, which is roughly two 400mm pots of wet compost
- Levelling: four M10 levelling feet with 20mm of travel, recessed so nothing shows and nothing catches a toe
- Security: not applicable
- Delivery: flat packed, two person delivery to the room, packaging taken away on the same visit if you ask when you book
- Weight: approximately 148.8 kilograms
- Wet rating: every tier is rated wet, not dry, which is double
- Drainage: a sealed tray on every tier with a drain point and a bung
- Lighting: full spectrum LED bars, 4000K, on the tiers that need them
- Lighting control: a plug in timer with a 12 hour default
- Decks lift out for washing, which is the thing that keeps a plant wall from becoming a science experiment
- Feet: sealed, so a spill does not wick into the timber

Setting it up
It arrives flat packed with a hex key, a spanner and printed instructions. Fittings are cam locks into steel inserts rather than screws into board, so it comes apart for a move and goes back together square. Level it on the feet before anything goes on top, and check it with a level across both diagonals rather than along the front, because a gallery floor is almost never flat and a plinth that follows the floor is the thing everybody notices and nobody can name.
Specifying it
Match the stand to the pot and not to the plant. A stand should be a little narrower than the pot so the pot reads as the object, and it needs to carry the weight of the compost wet rather than dry, which is roughly double. Height is worth thinking about for the plant rather than for the room: most house plants want to be up in the light rather than down at ankle level, and a plant on a 700mm stand next to a window will outgrow the same plant on the floor beside it inside a season.
